Is it a good idea to buy a pre-packaged business plan?
I am in the research stage of starting a small business. In the industry I am interested in, there is a site that offers a “canned” business plan where you just change the details to fit your model and area. It seems like a huge time saver and a bargain ($89) to someone who does not have experience in this area. Is this a good idea?
Kim, as you’ve probably seen already, you’ll find plenty of business plans online, but most of them are generic. For instance, the Small Business Administration (http://www.sba.gov) has a very solid program on how to write a business plan. These are great if you are creating the type of business in which a canned plan isn’t available.
I’m not usually a big fan of spending precious cash on non-revenue-generating items like business plans, but the investment is so small and if it moves you down the planning path faster, those would be dollars well spent. And you can use the saved time finding mentors in your business area who will be able to back you up on your assumptions in the plan. I wouldn’t skimp on mentors at all.
